“It isn’t weak to ask for help. It’s like using a flashlight when you are lost in the dark.”

On July 16, 1997, Clark Flatt’s world changed forever.  This was the date that his 16 year old son, Jason, became a statistic of the “Silent Epidemic” when he took his own life.  Reeling from this tragedy, Clark’s path of healing found him looking for insights and information.  His search determined that there was a vital need for suicide awareness and education and Clark dove in head first, creating the non-profit Jason Foundation.

Since its institution in 1997, The Jason Foundation has grown to over 200 affiliates throughout the United States.  JFI’s foundation and roots help to provide needed understanding and awareness regarding identifiable signs for at-risk individuals who may be contemplating suicide.  Their programs and educational resources provide parents, teachers, students, and so many more with knowledge, understanding, and practical tools to recognize the signs of those who may be wrestling with the idea of taking their own life.

It’s important to note that while The Jason Foundation is not a treatment or diagnosing organization, they are a viable piece to the puzzle in helping to bring suicide awareness to light and to have real and meaningful conversations about this important topic.  With the third leading cause of death in our 10-24 aged population, JFI is forging forward to make a difference in the world.

Clark will never get his son back but he knows that Jason’s spirit lives on in his work and in the lives that are saved through the programs JFI helps to bring to the public surrounding suicide awareness.  Knowledge is a powerful tool.  We make a difference in the lives of others when we meet them where they are, when we hear them, when we listen without judgement.  Everyone has a story, and every story matters.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a crisis, call 911, 988, 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or text “Jason” to 741741.
